The pharmacy retail market in India has witnessed a growth in recent years on account of rising demand for OTC drugs and increase in types of diseases. The flow in this growth is mainly originated from acceleration in urbanization, increase in disposable income and rising literacy rate in the country along with growing medical awareness. The aim of this study was to investigate the organization and management of retail pharmacies in rural area of Nagpur with special reference to the aspects like conduct of code of ethics, purchasing, sales, pricing, inventory control, good storage practices, business dominance etc. Survey research design method was used for the study, involving collection of data from the sample of retailers through their responses to predetermined questions. A random convenience sampling method was used to collect the primary data. The sample size selected was 36 retail pharmacy stores representing more than 83 % of the selected region of Kamptee and Kanhan region of Nagpur (India). It was observed that 75% stores were managed by pharmacist themselves whereas 25% hired a pharmacist for services. It was also observed that specialized knowledge and skills are required for understanding and selling the pharmaceutical products. Prescription handling in this region was another issue that was investigated during the study. From the study it could be concluded that the retailers in the region were managing their drug store efficiently with some critical issues. The study also revealed that role of pharmacist is very important in delivering the services.
